The Bank of the West Classic Taube Tennis Center, Stanford University, Stanford, CA
Sunday, August 3, 2014

With her defeat of Angelique Kerber this afternoon, 7-6(1), 6-3 , Serena Williams became only one of five players who have won the Bank of the West Classic at least three times. With 60 titles to her credit entering into the final it may have seemed an over-match against an opponent who had three titles to her name, but Ms. Kerber did offer a spirited defense throughout. Williams, who has clearly recovered since her early withdrawal at Wimbleton, improved her lifetime record against Kerber to 5-1. She is on track to match the record of Kim Clijsters who owns four of these trophies but still has some work ahead if she is to best Martina Navratilova’s record of six wins (1993, 1991, 1988, 1980, 1979 and 1978).

Whispers of a Williams vs. Williams match-up are always in play at these events…even though the luck of the draw would have only allowed a semi-final match. Serena – who is set to spend her 200th non-consecutive week at the No. 1 spot in the rankings – is both a fan favorite and a mainstay in the WTA world. She is to tennis as Floyd Mayweather is to boxing: An Enduring Champion. We at Image and Style Magazine thank the organizers for allowing our photographers to cover the tournament and experience the exciting finale.
