Entertainment at Sea

Entertainment at Sea Quantum of the Seas will feature advanced technology and multi-faceted performances.

Robotic screens descending from the ceiling, a harp whose strings shoot out from the stage to enclose the entire theater, dancers, singers, aerialists, musicians and actors showcasing their talents in genres spanning the performance spectrum. All of this and more is what audiences on Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Quantum of the Seas, will be able to take in.
In November 2014, the curtain will rise on the next evolution of Royal Caribbean International’s entertainment offerings– an extensive selection of futuristic, visually and acoustically stunning shows and productions, all included in the regular fare for a cruise on Quantum.

“We want our guests to be able to customize their entertainment program as they see fit,” says Alison Frazier, Manager of Guest Activities and Entertainment. “We will have entertainment everywhere all of the time. If you’re clever enough, you can see shows twice. I know that’s what I’ll be doing.”
Bringing these performances to life are three, state-of-the-art venues: Two70°, the Royal Theater and Music Hall. Two70°, a three story room with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, transforms daytime ocean views into nighttime video, robotics and artistry right before audiences’ eyes.

“When you come into Two70° in the morning, the sun will be beaming through the windows and you can grab a coffee and relax with a book or family and friends,” Frazier says. “Then fast forward 10 hours and we have our DJ playing, the bar is rocking and we have a burst in the air because we are about to start that evening’s spectacular show.”

At the forefront of Two70° is Vistarama, the most complex seamless video production system at sea that turns the room into any scene, real or imagined, as well as the Roboscreens, six 100-inch screens connected to robot arms that descend from the ceiling to stage surprise performances throughout the cruise. These technologies feature dynamic digital content that blends with talent of the live entertainers who sing, dance, play music or fly through the air amongst them.

“We don’t have a backstage in Two70°, so the performers will be descending from the ceiling, coming up on lifts from the floors and from side stages, so the guests are never going to know where to look,” says Christi Coachman Orengo, Director of Entertainment.

Two70° will host a variety of original performances, concerts and parties, including Starwater, which uses video, sound, special effects and a variety of artistic mediums to bring together deep space and deep sea and Gatsby, a glittering celebration of the roaring twenties with immersive deco details, a live DJ and plenty of swanky cocktails.

Perhaps the most epic performance on board, however, will take place in the 1,300-seat Royal Theater, the largest entertainment venue on Quantum. Sonic Odyssey, inspired by the work of performance artist William Close, blends the sounds of the massive, theater-encompassing Earth Harp, a Drum Wall consisting of 136 drums, and more eclectic instruments with the talents of singers, dancers, aerialists and gymnasts to create one, 45-minute awe-inspiring theatrical masterpiece.

Continuing Royal Caribbean’s tradition of offering fully-licensed Broadway shows on board, the Royal Theater will also host the Tony-award winning musical MAMMA MIA!. Following the show, guests looking to channel their inner dancing queen can head to the moody, dim and inviting Music Hall for a red carpet MAMMA MIA! After Party, where they can strike a pose with the cast before getting their groove on with party favors and signature drinks.

The Music Hall will also allow guests an up-close and personal evening of live bands, dancing and signature parties. Covering everything from the Beatles to Bon Jovi, Soul Train to modern DJ remixes, an array of house and tribute band performances and late-night groove sessions will keep the ship rocking long after the sun sets beneath the rolling waves.
The countdown begins to when Royal Caribbean cruisers will discover a never before imagined, exhilarating definition of what it means to be entertained.
