Oh yes, the media (note that I do not say Press…as there is a difference) is agog with the imagined faults of a young man who is trying to perform at his best despite difficulties. Deficiency is asserted by any number of flabby, slack-jawed, tell-no-bodies who could not possibly play at the professional level…because that is what media needs – controversy. If it for some reason does not exist, it must be created…to draw attention to yet another channel/commentator in search of traction in the ratings game.
If one were strictly business-minded, one would look at the first quarter’s results (4 out of 16 weeks including the Super Bowl) and decide that a change was needed…and that the negative trend in success (as measured by digits in the win column) was proof. Now the hard part – what to change. Is it the person at the quarterback position…or are our perceptions still warped by our memories of having seen not one but two of the greatest quarterbacks in memory in a 49er’s uniform? Is it coaching? What about management? At present, we do not know what should be changed.
You will remember now that in every contest, some team must lose. It isn’t pleasant. Irrational hope and expectation cannot resolve defeat without blame. The fact is that we are currently in the doghouse, taking the lumps, etc. until the offense can, as they have in the past, again find their footing – and – again become the competitive team we desire.
Ala Tom Petty…The waiting is the hardest part. The giving of support in times of despair. The courage to take the loss in stride and trust that something is learned from the exercise. The wisdom to know that quick fixes do not exist.
Our recommendation: These are our boys. Let’s stick with them. All of them.
