A Golden Showtime For Amir “King” Khan

Khan the Punisher proved indomitable for challenger Devon Alexander in the main event.

Khan the Punisher proved for challenger Devon Alexander in the main event. Khan’s speed and combinations simply overwhelmed Alexander who was prevented from getting inside and executing his game plan. The judge’s scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 120-108 affirmed the lop-sided nature of the contest. In fact, we wish to promote a new abbreviation for such future contests: EBKO (Everything But the Knock Out).

Accuracy was the key with Khan landing 54 percent of his power punches to Alexander’s 32 percent and 43 percent of his total shots versus Alexander’s 20 percent. In post-fight comments, Khan stated, “I was up against a very skilled fighter and I knew we couldn’t make any mistakes. I’m the best boxer with the quickest hands in the world and I think this was one of my best performances. I really believe I have earned my shot against the best fighter in the world: Floyd Mayweather.”

Alexander acknowledged the defeats saying, “My coach told me to get off and I wasn’t getting off. I could have caught him I just didn’t do it tonight. I was supposed to follow the game plan, I was moving good but I just couldn’t move forward and get off.”

Keith Thurman’s victory over the previously undefeated Leonard Bundo was even more one-sided. Most notably, Thurman went EBKO for only the third time in his career. The 26-year old was simply faster than his 40-year old opponent.

“Bundu was a smart fighter,” Thurman said. “He was tricky and he switched. He came to not get knocked out and he was able to do that, but he was unable to win rounds. It was hard to time him because he was always switching it up, but we boxed smart. It was a great learning experience. “

Abner Mares rolled up three knock downs on his way to victory over Jose Ramirez. The former three-division champion consistently got the better of his opponent in their exchanges – dealing more damage and forcing Ramirez’s corner to throw in the towel after the fifth round.

“Ramirez was a tough guy,” Mares said. “He took a lot of shots and he gave me a few, too. My corner was like, Abner what are you doing? Use your distance. But I wanted to knock him out.”

“All I know is I’m going to be a four-time world champion. I’m going to conquer the featherweight division. Abner Mares is back. I want my rematch against Johnny Gonzalez. It’s going to happen.”

In the opening bout – an IBF Junior Middleweight Title Eliminator – Jermall Charlo dealt Lenny Bottai a TKO in the third round to ruin his first U.S. appearance. Charlo was all over Bottai from the first bell, but it was that left hook to the head in the third that sent Bottai to the canvas.

Charlo’s focus is now to book a match-up with the current IBF Junior Middleweight World Champion, Cornelius Bundrage. He said, “It’s been a long time coming for Team Charlo. Everyone believed in me and now I’m here.”
