World No.2 Thompson stronger than ever and ready to continue her golfing dream.

For most people, realising a dream is a never-ending ambition, but when you have an extraordinary talent at your fingertips like Lexi Thompson things can happen a little quicker.

The American golf star is currently enjoying the best year of her career having risen to No.2 in the world for the first time, leading the way on the LPGA Race to the CME Globe and enjoying victories at the Kingsmill Championships and the Indy Women in Tech Championship.

Indeed, Lexi Thompson has come a long way from the 12-year-old girl standing over the first tee at the 2007 US Open at Pine Needles.

Having taken up the game as a five-year-old she has long been talked about as the future of golf and, despite still being only 22, she is living her dream of competing consistently at the very top of the golfing world.

Growing up in the spotlight, she admits: “It’s a lot to handle but I love my fans and doing all the social media, and reaching out to everyone that supports me.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do – play on the LPGA Tour. When I made my first US Open at 12, I realised that was my dream, to be out playing against the best players in the world.”

Top level sport is never straight-forward though and golf can be a cruel game, no more so than at the ANA Inspiration back in May, but Thompson responded in inspirational fashion by storming to two big titles.

First at the Kingsmill, a tournament she sky dived into with Navy Seals, and then earlier this month in Indiana where she celebrated in the traditional style by pouring milk over her head and kissing the iconic bricks at the speedway circuit.

“I think overcoming adversity is very important,” she said. “I think it’s something that you learn from golf about yourself, you learn about responsibilities and how strong you are.

“This year’s been a little bit of a struggle, and an up and down year but I’ve overcome a lot of things and definitely learned how strong I am on and off the golf course. It’s been a great year.”

2017 has been a fruitful year but Thompson has no plans to imminently rest on her laurels with more major victories to target and her love of golf still burning as bright as ever.

“I love the challenge,” she said. “That’s what got me hooked on it, that you can never perfect the sport. It’s something that’s new every single day.

“Growing up with two older brothers I was always a very determined person but I still love the travel. I love getting to play the best courses.”

It is those brothers, Nicholas and Curtis, that act as her golfing inspiration – both of them players in their own right, with Tiger Woods and Nancy Lopez the other players she looked up to from an early age.

Growing up, the sporting passion was initially shared between golf, basketball and soccer before turning her attention full-time onto golf, a decision that has been fully exonerated with both her success and passion for the game.

“I want to show them [the fans] that I’m doing something I love,” she said. “Yes, it takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work but I want to show them that it is possible if you believe in yourself and go after what you want.”

As for any more outlandish golf-course arrivals in the future, it is a case of never say never.

Thompson added: “I don’t know, you’ll just have to wait and see. You’ll never know how I’ll enter a golf tournament anymore!”
