A Champion’s Journey

Former World Champion, Golden Boy Promotions fighter and now Trainer, Israel Vazquez, got in his car in the early morning for a long drive. His destination: Corona, California. The Junior Foundation Charities had called him the previous day to ask if he would visit a young boy who was terminally ill.

As the miles rolled by Vasquez had no idea what to expect. He had packed some memorabilia as gifts, but what would he say?

Angel Santos sat in his living room and awaited the visit of one of his idols. It was his wish to meet a couple of his favorite fighters before passing. As Israel entered the home he found Angel sitting up in the living room. They immediately connected. “El Magnifico” told Angel, “Have faith and knock out this illness. I promise once you get better I will take you to my gym and I will train you personally!” He also brought his WBC Championship Belt for Angel to wear for a while. Angel’s broad smile spoke volumes.

Angel’s mother recounted her efforts to save her son. They had been to Argentine for a treatment which is not available here. In November, the doctors informed her there was nothing more that could be done. They gave Angel 48 hours to live.

Their response: A huge party. Superstar Gerardo Ortiz sang to him. Miraculously, those 48 hours have turned into 3 and a half months. Angel’s mother says she realizes every day is one day less…but she also is thankful Angel is still here.

The progression of Angel’s Neuroblastoma is such that he may have but two weeks left. He awaits the call from God. But Angel’s family is very thankful Israel Vazquez took the time to make his dream come true.
