American Idol XIV Auditions

Last call auditions for the 14th season of American Idol were held at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Thousands came from as far away as Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia and Texas in hopes they would be selected. Many of our own Bay Area residents also came out to register and submit to initial auditions. Those who pass this judging panel will be qualified to appear on the broadcast episodes which are set to air in January.

Our caffeine-infused team hit the ground at five in the morning to interview the contestants, Senior Supervising Producer Patrick Lynn and the show’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Both men have been with the show since its inception and responded to our questions. When asked if there was anything new he could share with us for the upcoming season, Patrick Franklin said, “There are a few new elements that I can’t quiet share just yet, but the one I can is the called the True Believer – someone who has been the contestant’s strongest supporter throughout the competition. If their idol is selected, they will receive a cash award.” On a separate topic, he remarked, “As a producer I will continue to bring to you the contestant’s stories, their words, dreams and struggles and focus on the dedication each of these young Idol hopefuls embodies.”

Many arrived by plane. Others drove from as far away as Arizona. They came with parents and/or with grandparents. Our reporters took the opportunity to interview contestants while they waited. One who caught our eye – Donte Sidney from Richmond, California – was confident and with good reason – his determination was backed up by some serious vocal strength. We hope to see him in January. Two teachers from Sacramento’s River City High School (choral director Linda Cristman and jazz director Felicia Wetherly) made the 2 hour drive with 15 of their students to give them the opportunity to audition. We also ran into back-up singer for Sly and the Family Stone, Pat Craig, who brought her 15 year old granddaughter, Diamond Gentry to the event.

Non-contestants also enjoyed the day. Siblings Alex and Tiago Silva were more than pleased to support their sister Tatiana (while also skipping school for the day). When asked who her favorite past idol was, she replied, “Kelly Clarkson.” Though chilly, the morning was bearable. Ryan Seacrest was particularly energetic and very much enjoyed working the crowd. Numerous Seacrest selfies with fans were taken. We were delighted to find him approachable and also excited about the upcoming season.
