Chevron Shoot-out

Giants versus 49ers at the Chevron Shoot-out

The spring sunshine was only slightly brighter than the gleam off of the eight championship trophies on display prior to the start of this 4th annual contest for charity. A $100,000 purse was up for grabs as current/former members of the San Francisco 49ers organization (Jerry Rice, Brent Jones, Steve Young, Harris Barton, Ronnie Lott, Dwight Clark and others) took up the challenge against current/former members of the San Francisco Giants organization (Bruce Bochy, Matt Cain, Buster Posey, Duane Kuiper and Javier Lopez).

This contest follows what is referred to as “The Whiskey Route” – holes 1, 2, 3, 17 and 18 – so named because of each hole’s unique difficulties and majestic scenery. The short descriptions:

• 1st hole, Par 4 – A skillfully placed 3-wood positions you to assault the tightly bunkered green.
• 2nd hole, Par 5 – Let it all out and maybe make the green in two. Your second shot is a lover’s leap over and between beckoning traps.
• 3rd hole, Par 4 – First shot placement is all important. If you can’t control your long shot, carry a rake.
• 17th hole, Par 3 – Wind and Sea come calling. Like a pirate’s victim, the errant hook tells no tales.
• 18th hole, Par 5 – Follow the ocean and go long. Straight shooters are rewarded. Portrait of a green as an oasis amidst the traps.

The San Francisco 49ers bested the San Francisco Giants this year taking four out of five holes and thus the lion’s share of the stake to be directed to their charitable organization. Jerry Rice was the feature player of the day with his best-chip-shot-closest-to-the-hole to break a tie on 18. Of the $100,000 total, $40,000 went to the San Francisco 49ers Foundation and $40,000 to Monterey Peninsula charitable organizations of their choosing. The Giants Community Fund received $10,000 and another $10,000 went to local organizations.
