Back in November of last year we implored those in positions of influence to arrange this match-up…and it has finally come to pass. The May 2, 2015 fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at the Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada is being billed
as the Fight of the Century – a bold claim given nearly 7/8th of the century has yet to be experienced – but we prefer to see
it as a contest between two of the Titans of the boxing world. Both are champions with impressive records. And with a win in their favor, either would be an outstanding choice to represent excellence in the sport as a champion of champions.

This day served as the one and only media event for this fight and attracted over 600 credentialed media from around the globe. Further events have been deemed unnecessary given the stature of the fighters. For those seated adjacent to the podium, looking out on the sea of media representative must have been inspiring…and an acknowledgement of the years of effort that went into making this event a reality. We congratulate them on their perseverance…and we also offer this cautionary observation:

Even with your years in the business of promotion, you are unprepared for the level of interest this event will generate. It is bigger than the Super Bowl, The Olympics or the FIFA World Cup because it is about the individual – a universal hero – in combat against an equal. Regardless of which side each favors, viewers of the event will arrive with a personal connection to their fighter. It will be as if they themselves were in the ring.

You, as promoters/networks/organizations, have a rare opportunity to convert these viewers into lifelong boxing fans. In your run-up to the match, create programming that educates the viewers on the art of boxing – the equipment, the fighter’s stance
and form, the offensive punches as well as defensive blocks – to enrich their enjoyment of the May 2nd spectacle. Weigh the dollars you spend on such programming against the returns you are sure to receive in future ticket and PPV sales. This is your moment. Don’t miss it.
