Emmy Awards Winners

In the run-up to this year’s EMMYs, the buzz revolved around two shows: AMC’s Breaking Bad and the PBS Masterpiece series, Sherlock. Let’s have a look at how those shows did in the honors department.

For Breaking Bad it was a shower of gold. Based on a body of work which finally reached a crescendo in the series finale, Bryan “Sneaky Pete” Cranston claimed his well-deserved award for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series. The story may be in the telling, but the best stories begin with the writing…so it is no wonder that Moira Walley Beckett garnered the top spot for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series. Two series characters also received acclaim: Anna Gunn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series trophy while Aaron Paul took the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series honor. All that was left was for Vince Gilligan to accept the award for Outstanding Drama Series.

The PBS Masterpiece series Sherlock was thrice awarded for their fresh approach to the time-honored classic. Lead actor Benedict Cumberpatch (Holmes) received Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. The essential Dr. Watson as portrayed by actor Martin Freeman was rightly given the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie award. Steven Moffat, the series’ writer – and yes, that Steven Moffat from the Dr. Who series, received the Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special award. If you have missed it, this is your chance to connect with a new classic. Go to http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/sherlock/ to find out more.
