Hispanic Box Office Contribution

Hispanics accounted for 22% – or nearly $400 million – of the opening week audience this summer. And that’s important because opening week numbers often set the stage for how much money a title pulls in overall. That’s why last quarter we launched “Week One Winners,” a ranking of the top movies for Hispanics during the period. We use Nielsen’s Box Office Estimation tool to index Hispanic box office contribution to the total Hispanic population 2+ (17% of the U.S.) in order to get a better feel for how this consumer truly impacts the movie business.

Above are the rankings for July-September 2014. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which knocked Summer Box Office champion Guardians of the Galaxy out of the top spot on its opening week, tops our list. Looks like their summer Spanish-language investment paid off. Stay tuned for the impact of Hispanics at the Box Office as we approach the Holiday season with the next release of Q4 “Week One Winners.”
