Modern Design For Cause

On April 12, 2014, the Silicon Valley Modern Home Tour presented a selection of the finest examples in modern residential design to interested tour-goers. Properties in Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Saratoga were visited during the course of the five hour event. A VIP Lounge event brought together participants, architects, homeowners and selected architectural experts for a post-tour discussion of the projects.

Funds from ticket sales went to benefit Vision Literacy (http://www.visionliteracy.org), a partnership creating opportunities for adult and family literacy education in the Silicon Valley area. Through its operations in Gilroy, San Jose, Sunnyvale and other Silicon Valley communities, Vision Literacy has provided adults with basic literacy and technology skills for over 25 years. Its students acquire vital reading, writing, speaking and listening tools, allowing them to become better parents, employees, business owners and citizens.

Many of us take for granted our ability to interact with each other and our communities at large on a daily basis, despite it being so essential. Whether speaking with our child’s teachers, applying for a job or simply asking for directions, our success and happiness is, to a large extent, determined by our ability to effectively communicate with others.

Recent studies clearly demonstrate that learning basic literacy skills builds an individual’s analytical, team-building, self-esteem and confidence levels. Working to develop these skills in our local population is a sound economic investment, boosting Santa Clara County’s economy by creating job opportunities, stimulating consumer spending and generating tax revenue.

Vision Literacy’s services are also actively addressing some of the most serious problems facing society today – crime, unemployment, poverty, homelessness, poor health, high incarceration rates and child welfare often have illiteracy at their core.

Over the last few decades, Vision Literacy has assisted thousands of Bay Area adults in achieving their dreams. Funding from sources like the Modern Home Tour promote the expansion of these important programs and guide thousands more toward self-sufficient, productive lives through the power of literacy.
