Vernon Davis A Force Of Community
With natural charm and a genuine love for community, Vernon Davis is a man building for the future. The foundation that bears his name promotes art education and art appreciation among youth from disadvantage backgrounds. Scholarships are given to dedicated art students and grants to deserving non-profit programs who share the foundation’s ideals.
But did you know that aside from being a record-setting professional football player with the San Francisco 49ers, Vernon Davis is also an artist? Some of his works are on display at Gallery 85 in the Santana Row Center in San Jose, CA. Vernon the artist knows how art education and appreciation has enriched his life and now, with success, has plans to spread this knowledge to the public.
The Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts (VDFA) receives its funds through receipts from events and from donations by like-minded individuals. Outreach projects are designed to re-purpose the participant’s creative energy into exploring the arts while providing a safe environment away from streets.
Vernon remembers that as a youth interested in art he had nobody encouraging him to explore his capabilities. It just wasn’t cool. But the VDFA is working to raise awareness and knowledge of the arts so that young people don’t feel hindered in their exploration.
The VDFA is not all about art though. On December 21, 2013, Vernon held his annual Christmas Toy Giveaway for Bay Area children. Donations from a variety of sources including Mattel assured that every child could find something to take home.
