Cristiano Ronaldo The FIFA Ballon d’Or
On Monday January 13, 2014, FIFA held the Ballon d’Or ceremony to honor the best footballer on the planet. This year it went to superstar Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aviero – a.k.a. Cristiano Ronaldo. He is the first Portuguese to win the award twice (2013 and 2008) and placed second in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012.
Ronaldo was overcome with emotion on accepting the golden trophy from presenters Michel Platini and soccer legend Pele. With later composure he vowed to work just as hard in the coming season and hoped to return for another award next year.
His honoring put a stop to the streak of wins amassed by another soccer superstar – Lionel Messi – who had claimed the award for the four previous (2009 through 2012) seasons.
