NFL Pre-Season: 49ers vs. Cowboys
Can’t catch a break. That should have been the Cowboy’s tag line last Saturday. Leading in first downs, total yards, passing yards, total plays and yards per play, Dallas should have walked away the victor…were it not for the three turnovers they suffered. Credit heads-up play by 49er defensive tackle Mike Purcell and 49er wide receiver Quinton Patton for 12 of San Francisco’s 23 points on the day. This week’s formidable-of-foot award is split between Niner’s kickers Phil Dawson and Corey Acosta who added 7 and 4 points respectively to the 23 total.
12 + 7 + 4 = 23 is the worrisome side of this recounting. Specifically, where is San Francisco’s offense? It’s early. The coaches are trying out players in advance of the final cut, etc. Right? We will see.
Highlights: We were pleased to see rookie tight end Rory Anderson pull down two passes for 32 yards…and hope he and/or the other rookie tight end, Blake Bell, have the opportunity to understudy Vernon Davis who is now in his tenth season. We were delighted to see rookie Jarryd Hayne carry eight times for 54 yards. This young man comes to us from the world of Australian Rugby and is not afraid of taking contact – they don’t play with pads down under!
Onward to Denver!
